this morning after a bizarre home construction accident. dante was doing some work on his home when he accidentally shot a 3 1/2 inch nail into his skull. amazingly, dante didn't realize what happened and actually kept working before going to the hospital. >> i actually worked another 12 hours afterwards, went salting and plowing and the next day slept and then decided to go to the intermediate care center. >> doctors performed surgery to remove the nail and he is recovering in the hospital. they say, other than the actual wound, he amazingly didn't cause any damage to his brain. >> wow. >> they always say it hurts more when they take it out and dpoesz in. >> apparently, it never entered his mind. >> chris. >>> at the end of the 7:00 hour, an end to an era. >> preparing to say good-bye, the long time academic host >>> after more than 20 tho,000 contestants and 200,000 questions, mac mcgarry is moving on. >> he's retiriing as host of "it's academic" after a span of decades. we caught up with him to talk about how the show changed over the years and the most memorable moments. >> reporte

, really, i think the reaction from the come dant of the marine corps to the secretary of state was entirely appropriate. on the one hand, this type of dehumanization of the enemy takes place in every major conflict. on the other hand, we hold our soldiers to a higher standard. and we have commissioned and noncommissioned officers that are paid to make sure that these types of things do not happen. >> woodruff: so how could something like this happen? >> well, i mean, first off, are you putting 18 and 19-year-olds in kbachlt i think in a lot of ways it's good for the american people to see these videos because people don't have an idea of what afghanistan is like, what the war is like. and yet, it's important that people see the way that soldiers can be dehumanized through the experience. you see this happen with young soldiers. you see it happen when they're not properly supervised by noncommissioned officers and by commissioned officers. and unfortunately, this isn't the first time we've seen something like this take place in the war in iraq or afghanistan. >> woodruff: thinki

to read dante's inferno to understand newt gingrich. but we've talked about this for months now. that the republican primary electorate is angry and mean. today feel not just opposition in terms of policy to barack obama, but disgust. sometimes hatred. and mitt romney did well not fully responding to that. but we've seen south carolina, which may be the meanest of the voters. he's using a bull horn to call him a food stamp president, to bash john king and williams to put him in his place. and it's not a surprise that it works in south carolina. the big experiment will be rather it works in florida and beyond. >> is rom niece's collapse principally because of newt's viciousness, or is it because romney is largely responsible himself, because he will not give us a clear answer on releasing his taxes. >> i think the results of tonight will tell us some of that. i think to the point that david was making, it's still possible that they will kind of split their vote between santorum and gingrich. we don't know how that will shake out. with regard to romney, just as someone who this is
